I believe it was 2008 that Robert A. Heinlein has a southern fundamentilist elected President (Revolt in 2100). There is no election in 2012. Heinlein is credited with the ideas behind the waterbed, moving walkways and the cell phone. One can also make a good case for the linear accelerator and the atomic power plant.
