I don't think greed covers the motivation either, since greed is a very surface emotion that burns hot and cools quickly. It's a very sulferic and sludgy form of hubris, which says that "I'm smart, and I'm going to bilk the sh*t out of each and every one of those dumb f**ks I can because no one else will pick up on this." It's not about money or even misaligned interests, as you hepfully suggest. It's more like a sick, subsexual thrill, an attempt to fill a negative void with something very unshapely and unwholesome. "Bonfire of the Vanities" seems like a comic book compared to this numbing numskull. I'm all for making money but this story just made my heart sink to my knees. Worse than Enron.
