OK, I now know what trinket I want as a graduation present.
Apple is now selling their iPod Nano RED Special Edition in an 8 GB version.
Mmmm. Shiny red nano-y goodness.

Saw these in an Apple shop in a mall yesterday; they’re quite spiffy.
I was poking around for the Shuffle — not in stores yet.

I lost my iPod recently, and I replaced it with an SanDisk Sansa e280. I gotta say that I like it way, way better than the iPod. The controls are better and more intuitive; you can access menus from anywhere; it has an FM tuner so you can listen to NPR; and it looks super-cool.
If you’ve bought a lot of tracks from iTunes or you need a red player, it won’t be of much use, but if you ask me Apple’s market share is making them lazy.
The replaceable battery on the SanDisk is a nice touch. Skawt also has a non-iPod MP3 player and is quite happy with it, but then he also likes Windows Media Player. I’m not really looking to migrate off iTunes — I’m invested into a fair number of iTunes tracks, and adding in the price of buying all those tracks again makes moving off the iPod platform unattractive.
Woot for the power of user lock-in. Fortunately I’m OK with it.
