With friends like these, who needs enemies?

The "about the author" bit at the end of this column describes Burt Prelutsky as a humorist, so it's possible this is intended to be funny. Frankly, it left me feeling more than a little queasy:

Although it seems a long time ago, it really wasn't, that people who came here from other places made every attempt to fit in. [snip]

That has changed, you may have noticed. And I blame my fellow Jews. When it comes to pushing the multicultural, anti-Christian agenda, you find Jewish judges, Jewish journalists, and the American Civil Liberties Union, at the forefront.

My queasiness is not eased by the fact that the man writing this identifies as a Jew. As the old saying goes, with friends like these, who needs enemies?

There are so many points in these post I would love to comment on. I share your queasiness about the public arena. It is no more comfortable to be a Bible-believing evangelical Christian than it is to be a Jew. Jerry Falwell and his ilk are no more representative of my beliefs than of yours, yet they are the ones who shape your understanding of what an evangelical is.

The Glorious Appearing is fiction based on the theology of the authors; theology that is by no means absolute. Their interpretation is disputed by many evangelical scholars. It is interesting that the reviews focus on the most negative descriptives of the book. The series is based on Revelation, but again with the spin of the authors theology.

I could comment on each and every point, but my goal is not to dispute your perspectives. It is only to remind you of my viewpoint. I'm always a little taken aback when I am hit with the word "prosletyze". I am also confounded when people tell me they don't want me to pray for them. They seem to think that prayer constitutes some form of harm for them or that it is some kind of witches potion. And yet I contiune to pray for those that I know and care about, whether they share my belief or not. I understand that to be an important part of what God calls me to be and do.

It's not that I get upset when a friend prays for me. I do appreciate it, even if I don't share those beliefs. What I dislike is the aggressive self-righteousness of the typical evangelical you see in the public arena. Their "I'm right, you're wrong" smugness simply pisses me off. Especially after hearing how many of them have multiple divorces, gay or lesbian children, drug addiction problems, and/or financial improprieties.

The line, "Do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly before God" (Micah, 6:8) has a great deal of meaning for me, and when I look at most of the people who claim to represent mainstream American Christianity, I don't see a lot of any of those attributes.
