Well That Is a Surprise

Sandra Day O'Connor, the first woman on the Supreme Court and a swing vote on abortion as well as other contentious issues, announced her retirement Friday

And we all though it would be Rehnquist to go first.

Now, of course, the shit will truly start to hit the fan. It's not going to be pretty.

Here is my fearless prediction.

Bush will nominate a nut-job so right wing that it takes everyone's breath way. Hitler, for example. (Hey! Hitler's got time on his hands these days.)

The Democrats will grimly filibuster the nominee to death. It will take a long time and they will be met with invective and incessant abuse: how DARE they filibuster a fine candidate like Hitler, how DARE they keep the Supreme Court under-strength, how DARE they be so obstructionist all the time???? And so forth.

Hitler's name will be withdrawn.

Then Bush will nominate someone only slightly less controversial--Saddam Hussein, say.

The Democrats would like to filibuster again, but they have been so worn down over Hitler that they cave in over Hussein.

Bush himself is not smart enough to think of this, but Karl Rove is.

And speaking of Karl Rove, the chief analyst for MSNBC just said that he thinks the material being turned over by Time Magazine in the Valerie Plame case will show that the one who leaked Plame's CIA status to the press was none other than Karl Rove himself.

He is certainly petty and vindictive enough.

If that is the case, and it can be proved, Rove will have to do some time in the pokey.

Couldn't happen to a nicer guy.
