I don't know where I left my brain, but it certainly wasn't working all that well this morning. As I cruised down Highway 280 heading towards work, I noticed that the gas was bouncing off empty. I mean, REALLY bouncing off empty - the trip odometer was showing more than 350 miles, and I ought to refuel right around 300. And the nearest gas station was about 5 miles away.
I wasn't too happy by the time I got to the station, but at least I still had some gas left in the tank. I got to work almost a half-hour late and my brain still hadn't kicked into gear.
Mmmm. Coffee.

Glad you made it into the gas station! I had a similar, but less spectacular, experience recently.
I noticed my gas light went on, and it reminded me (after several days of not driving) that I needed to fill 'er up. What freaked me out is I could see the needle moving from the right side of the empty line to the left. Towards the "totally dried out" side.
I started to panic mildly. Then shook myself internally and gave a stern lecture about how panicking wasn't going to help the situation, the worst that could happen wasn't so bad, etc.
(I did get to the gas station, thankfully.)
I can't top the "bouncing off empty" part of your story though -- that part made me laugh. :)
