A Different Glow

One of the big issues with converting from old-style Edison light bulbs to compact fluorescents is the cost. I wonder whether the news today that Australia intends to ban old-style light bulbs will help drive down CF prices over time.

The Australian government on Tuesday announced plans to phase out incandescent light bulbs and replace them with more energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs across the country.

I'm all for saving energy and reducing greenhouse gases, but I have to say that this news also makes me feel a bit sad. "Old-style" light bulbs give off a warmer glow than CF bulbs, and I like the feel of that warmer light.

Ah well.

Cakesniffer:

The color temp of the CF bulb above me right now is almost exactly the same as the incandescent one it replaced. It's similar enough that it throws off the auto white balance of good digital cameras just like the real thing.

In fact, you can find CF bulbs in specific temps if you want them.

Sheesh. I was thinking of what would I do for a nice reading light ? Regardless of Cakesniffer's specs - which I candidly don't follow - I have been able to find Chinese fluorescents which give off a yellow tint. e-mail info@buffalolite.com I'm using Model 1014 : 1000 lumens 14W 8000 hour life with a Southern California Edison discount tag on the box.

One's first step in wisdom is to kuesteon everything - and one's last is to come to terms with everything.
