So, Why San Mateo?

Most people who move to the suburbs do so in order to raise a family in a "good" school district.

Not us. We moved to San Mateo to get more bang for our housing buck, better commuting options, and more walkability. Our address scores 77 out of 100 in the "Walk Score" at this fun mashup site I found tonight.

Our last apartment in San Francisco? It had a Walk Score of 55.

Skawt:

You forgot to check our old address in NYC: 100 out of 100.

artistry:

My neighborhood scored a 25, which is just wrong. At the end of my street is access to the county walking trail system, which goes through a wild space if you go south, to the lake and beyond if you go north. In addition, there are stores and restaurants just a half a mile away. Guess the system is geared to metro areas only since the locations featured in the sidebar are restaurants, bars, theaters, etc. But our community center is only 1.6 miles away, which is a nice little walk unless you are planning to use the health club and pool. Then I would rank it overkill.

It looks like the point of the site is, "do you need a car to live here."

So if you can walk less than .2 miles to the grocery store, that gets more points than having to walk .5 miles to the store -- because realistically, people are not going to haul bags of groceries more than a few blocks.

Rudi:

"Ghetto" multiplier should be included, too.

Our new place in Campbell (middle of nowhere): 75
Our current in place (south part of nowhere): 66
My old place in Central Valley (real middle of nowhere): 25

Here I thought I had a nice little walk-central location here, but with a Walk Score of 38, I'd have to say it is due to the fact that I see nothing wrong with walking one to 1.5 miles while fully loaded down with groceries. Which includes gallons of milk and bags of cat food, which aren't exactly the least mass-intensive items on any shopping list.

So I have to say YMMV on this one. Then again, I'm pretty damned weird when it comes to my walk distances.

26th Ave & California St in San Francisco = 85! Our old Cow Hollow apartment was a 92. Moving in the wrong direction? Better than the 32 I grew up in (Michigan)...

fiat lux:

The farther out you go on the avenues in SF, the lower the walk score.
